On Saturday August 23, 2008 area volunteers, Giles County employees, service organizations, and river outfitters will gather to clean ten designated miles along the New River. Everyone willing to work on behalf of the river is asked to meet at 9 in the morning at Camp Success in Narrows. If you have a boat, please bring it. The clean-up route will run from below Narrows Falls to Shumate Falls. Maps, safety instructions, and shuttle service will be provided. Thanks to a generous grant from Norfolk Southern, all participants will receive bright ReNew T-shirts and bumper stickers, and are invited to a post-clean up celebration at the Glen Lyn Town Park from 3-5.

Last Years “Fall Into The New” brought out more than 200 volunteers who picked up 300 tires and cleared over two tons of debris from the stretch of river between Pembroke and Bluff City. ReNew is a group focused on stewardship of the 37 Giles miles of the New River and includes the river guide organizations: New River Angler, New River’s Edge, and Canoe The New Outfitters; DGIF, DCR, National Committee for The New River, Giles Sheriff’s Department, Army Corps of Engineers, and Giles County personnel; as well as private citizens committed to the preservation and renewal of the historic New River.

ReNew is serious about protecting the 37 miles of the New that flow through Giles County. The group has already spearheaded a push for making penalties for littering more enforceable, supporting the County in erecting boat ramp kiosks for use by DGIF, installing trash-pick-up bag dispensers at boat ramps; and collaborating with the Giles County Sheriff’s department in the apprehension of felons perpetrating graffiti offences on the Ripplemead bridge abutments. ReNew The New has a song, a logo, a ballad, posters and ambitious plans—all about the river.
